The Essence of Epochal: Immortals Among Us
In Epochal, immortals represent the full spectrum of humanity’s archetypes—heroes and villains, visionaries and tyrants, every facet of human nature embodied in these ageless beings. The story spans from prehistory to the distant future, with immortals leaving indelible marks on every era. Imagine a world where the past is familiar yet intriguingly different, where immortals influence pivotal moments in history.
A Diverse Immortal Society
Natural Immortals
The original immortals, rare individuals with a genetic mutation allowing indefinite cell division, halting their aging at around 25. They possess perfect health and a formidable immune system but can still be killed by extreme measures like dismemberment or potent poisons.
Ngalyod
The first known natural immortal, born circa 6000 BC in Australia. As a revered shaman, Ngalyod traveled the world in search of others like himself, accumulating wisdom and languages along the way.
Neferu (The Nameless One)
Born around 3300 BC in Egypt, Neferu ruled as an immortal queen. Her quest for companionship and the secrets of immortality led to the creation of a life-extending serum. Forced to flee Egypt, she founded the secret utopian city of Amentet in the then-jungle Sahara, which became a hub of scientific and sociological innovation.’
Artificial Immortals
Mortals who have gained immortality through the serum created by Neferu’s scientists. This serum, made with the blood of natural immortals, was sold at a high price, often to the wealthiest and most powerful individuals, many of whom symbolize patriarchal corruption.
– Over time, the number of artificial immortals grew, creating a volatile dynamic between natural and artificial immortals. By the steampunk era of the 1800s, there were about 500 artificial immortals, many involved in clandestine and often nefarious activities.
Epochal’s Key Historical Moments
Early Innovations: The invention of the immortality serum in ancient Egypt sparked a series of scientific advancements, including the discovery of DNA during the steampunk era in the 1500s.
Jesus the Immortal: An alternate history where Jesus, a centuries-old Greek intellectual, founded a city based on Christian principles after his “resurrection,” only for it to become one of many minor religions.
The Rise of Amentet: Neferu’s secret city-state, a beacon of progress and refuge for the oppressed, became a center of knowledge and innovation, hidden beneath the desert sands.
Conflict and Power Struggles
The immortals are divided into factions, with natural immortals often clashing with the corrupt artificial ones. A war over control of the immortality serum has raged since the 1300s, continuing into the future. The idealistic faction within Amentet, advocating for democratizing the serum, faces constant threats from those seeking to monopolize immortality for personal gain.
The Future of Immortality
As the story progresses into the future, the quest to decode and replicate the immortality gene opens new frontiers, presenting unprecedented challenges and opportunities.
